Neil Getzlow’s Unmasked: Conquering Sexual Sin and Walking In Victory Review
By Paul Maglietta
Man……2020 was quite a year. Many of us found ourselves in a brand new world ironically as the world itself was shutting down due to the Covid 19 pandemic. I myself was relocated in my job and began struggling in ways that I could not even imagine. Many people found themselves diving deep into various ways of coping with brand new stressors, and some tightened their own masks to hide the person they were. My wife and I found ourselves drinking and eating more than we normally would have, constantly reassuring ourselves that this would all pass and it was okay to indulge a little bit more. Then something extraordinary happened. Through our podcasting we connected with an author by the name of Neil Getzlow who wanted us to help him share his story, and quite frankly it is a powerful one.
Upon my first conversation with Neil I knew there was something incredible there. He began telling me his story and he did not sugarcoat. Neil is a recovering addict and wanted to share his story of how he overcame an addiction to pornography and prostitution through finding religion. Neil’s book, Unmasked Conquering Sexual Sin and Walking in Victory, is his account of not only what led him to finally removing his mask but also his story of finding redemption. I will be honest, this was a tough read. Not because of poor quality, quite the opposite actually. Neil holds nothing back in his story and I was not expecting such a powerful first chapter. I was immediately engaged and had trouble even putting down the book. The chapters are brisk and to the point, a fact that makes the book feel like it is moving at fast pace but is still conveying full and valuable information and is perfect for someone like myself who has trouble sitting still for too long (three podcasts to edit also!). Furthermore each chapter ends with some personal questions, making the reader not only feel part of the process but also giving them a chance to address some of the potential things they need to work on themselves.
Now full disclosure on my part. I am not a religious person. I was raised Lutheran and have not practiced religion in years. Having said that Neil does not shy away from the fact that Jesus and finding religion were instrumental in rebuilding his life and keeping his marriage alive. What I found interesting is that when reading the book, and speaking with Neil directly, nothing ever comes off as too heavy handed or preachy. Neil’s writing strikes a balance between how much he credits Jesus and religion to saving his marriage, and just genuinely wanting to use his story and experience to help people. For someone who does not actively practice a religion this was a perfect combination for me, and I believe others will appreciate it as well.
Unmasked is an intense book, but for all the best reasons. It is raw, real, and eye opening about the world we all live in. We look forward to speaking with Neil again soon, and if you have not heard our interview with him it will be linked below.
